Casa de la Convalescència

From 9,50 €

One of Barcelona’s architectural gems

The Casa de la Convalescència is part of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau complex and was built in the late 19th century to make up for Barcelona’s lack of hospitals.

This former convalescent home stands next to the old Hospital de la Santa Creu. The building is part of the history of healthcare in Catalonia and was the place where the sick could be looked after and convalesce.

Inside you’ll be able to admire sculptures by Lluís Bonifaç, like the one dedicated to Saint Paul in the centre of the cloisters, and by Josep Llimona, as well as a beautiful Catalan ceramic frieze by Llorenç Passoles.

The former Casa de la Convalescència also contains a masterpiece by Josep Bal: a mural in the chapel that is considered the most representative painting of the Catalan baroque period.

Come and explore one of Barcelona’s architectural gems which is also home to the Institut d’Estudis Catalans, an institution dedicated to disseminating and carrying out research into Catalan culture and language.
