Sants Market

The outline of this jewel of functional modernista architecture protrudes above the rows of shops that line Barcelona's Carrer de Sants. It is well worth going inside to do some food shopping or just to let your senses carry you away.

Sants Market opened in 1913, on a plot of land known as the "Hort Nou" (new allotment). The market was built to house the large number of provisional stalls placed in a haphazard fashion along the old road known as the Carretera del Sant Crist. The building, which was designed by Pere Falqués, is rectangular and has a metal structure with exposed brick walls and a magnificent roof and façade decorated with ceramics and brick. Inside you'll find all manner of food stalls. Its charm partly stems from the fact that it retains its original features.
