Ramon Calsina. Human miseries - Fundació Vila Casas. Espais VolartBarcelona Art Season, Exhibitions
09/19/2025 - 01/18/2026

The exhibition Human Miseries presents the most critical and acidic side of Ramon Calsina i Baró's (Barcelona, 1901-1992) work, one of the most unique figures in 20th-century Catalan painting. Although his career developed outside official artistic movements, his legacy is of great importance. This exhibition focuses especially on his work in drawing, a discipline in which Calsina intensely captured the vices and virtues of human existence.

His drawings, often somber, act as a mirror reflecting the complexity of life, pointing out humanity's flaws with social criticism while simultaneously captivating the viewer with their tenderness and humanity. Influenced by Catalan pictorial tradition and the avant-garde movements of the 1930s, Calsina found himself in an intermediate position—considered too groundbreaking for traditional artists and too traditional for the more innovative ones. However, his work remains relevant, especially in his observations on issues such as gender violence, war, and systemic crises.
