Holy Week
Holy Week commemorates one of the most important episodes in the life of Christ: his passion, death and resurrection. It is a moveable feast that can be held between March and April, the date being associated with the first moon in spring, or Paschal moon. A series of events from Sunday to Sunday that remember Jesus entering Jerusalem, the Last Supper and his resurrection.
In Barcelona, the celebrations also involve the traditional blessing of palm branches and leaves on Palm Sunday, to commemorate Jesus being welcomed into Jerusalem by the Jews, and the Mones de Pasqua, cakes topped with elaborate chocolate sculptures that have evolved from the traditional chocolate eggs. They are wonderful examples of the skills of the city's master pastry chefs and bakers. There are also solemn processions that take place on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, organised by brotherhoods that have deep connections with the city. They take place inside iconic city landmarks, such as the basilica of Santa Maria del Pi, the parish church of Santa Anna and the church of Sant Jaume.
