Zurbarán (sobre) Natural - Museu Nacional d'Art de CatalunyaMain Events 2025, Barcelona Art Season
03/20/2025 - 06/29/2025
The splendor and mastery of Zurbarán inundate the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya with an exhibition dedicated to the master of the Spanish Baroque. The exhibition takes a unique approach based on his ability to transcend the real, and highlights the spiritual strength and almost mystical atmosphere of his works.
This exhibition is the first to bring together the three versions of The Vision of Saint Francis by Pope Nicholas V, allowing them to be compared and their nuances explored. It also looks at Zurbarán's impact on contemporary art, placing his legacy in dialogue with works by artists such as Antoni Tàpies, Alfons Borrell and Joan Hernández Pijuan.
Zurbarán's paintings, characterized by their dramatic lighting and formal purity, successfully transform the everyday into a transcendental experience. His mastery of chiaroscuro and geometric composition gives his figures a haunting presence, transforming them into authentic portals to the supernatural.
One outstanding feature of the exhibition is that it brings together the two versions of his famous Still Life with Pots, the one from the Museo del Prado and the one from the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, which are being shown together for the first time in Barcelona. An opportunity to admire the impeccable technique and symbolism of one of the most influential painters of his time.
