Cultivating the strange. Álvaro Perdices - La Virreina. Centre de la ImatgeBarcelona Art Season, Exhibitions
04/17/2025 - 09/28/2025
The exhibition Cultivating the strange is an anthology of the last fifteen years of the career of Álvaro Perdices (Madrid, 1971). Curated by Valentín Roma, the exhibition brings together a series of the artist's most iconic projects, together with new works created specifically for La Virreina Centre de la Imatge.
After studying at the University of California (UCLA) and living in Los Angeles for more than two decades, Perdices returned to Spain in 2011 and began his creative career, alternating his work as an artist with curating and coordinating exhibitions in institutions like the Prado Museum.
Recurring themes in Perdices' work include the concept of “de-education”, an allusion to collective structures that defend learning unencumbered by norms and hierarchies, and an analysis of the peripheral nature of the world, exploring the tensions between the rural and the urban, the wild and the civilized.
The exhibition shows his ability to fuse social and philosophical reflections with a visual aesthetic that questions the limits of established structures. Perdices has a proven track record that has led him to exhibit in prestigious national and international venues including the CA2M in Madrid, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, and the Museu Tàpies in Barcelona.
