Helen Levitt - KBR Fundació MapfreBarcelona Art Season, Exhibitions
09/23/2025 - 01/25/2026
The exhibition Helen Levitt at the KBR Fundación Mapfre, curated by Joshua Chuang, presents a comprehensive retrospective of the work of American photographer Helen Levitt (1913-2009). Over six decades, Levitt explored the streets of New York with her handheld camera, capturing spontaneity and beauty in everyday moments that often go unnoticed amidst the hustle and bustle of urban life. Her gaze focused especially on children at play, but also on adults and the elderly, always with a keen sensitivity to human gestures and movements.
This ambitious exhibition spans her entire career, from her early work in the 1930s to her later evolution. The exhibition includes her work during her stay in Mexico in 1941, her innovative use of color from the 1950s onwards, and some previously unpublished pieces. Additionally, the exhibition features a projection of her color slides and an interactive simulation that allows visitors to experience Levitt's vision through her viewfinder.
All of this provides the public with a comprehensive insight into one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century, whose work is distinguished by its warmth, sensitivity, and ability to capture the complexity of life in all its facets.
