My Contribution. Sara Gómez - La Virreina. Centre de la Imatge Barcelona Art Season, Exhibitions
04/17/2025 - 09/28/2025

The exhibition My Contribution presents, for the first time in a museum, a complete review of the work of Afro-Cuban filmmaker Sara Gómez (1942-1974). Curated by Valentín Roma, the exhibition traces the life and work of one of the leading exponents of Cuban documentary filmmaking in the 60s and 70s, a pioneer of anti-ethnographic and political cinema in Cuba.

Throughout her career, Gómez investigated her era from the perspective of a threefold disadvantage: she was young, female and black. Her works, which were created as part of the revolutionary project of 1959, offer a unique insight into the social and political tensions in revolutionary Cuba.

Among the films featured in the exhibition is Mi aporte... (1972), or My Contribution, in which Gómez explores the role of women in the public sphere, the workplace and the home, confronting both power structures and machismo. Other important works include Guanabacoa, crónica de mi familia (1966), De bateyes (1971), and De cierta manera (1974), which deal with issues including blackness, social exclusion, and class tensions in Cuban society.

Gómez was the first black woman to direct a feature-length fiction film in Cuba, and she tackled issues such as racism, feminism and social inequality from a deeply critical perspective. Her documentary and experimental films resonated with the discourse of decolonization and social justice that characterized the 1960s and 70s.
