Jardins de Laribal

The Jardins de Laribal are one of the hidden gems in Parc de Montjuïc and a delightful place for a leisurely stroll. This makes them one of the unmissable places to visit on the Barcelona science trail.

The lush vegetation, the water cascading down the waterfalls, the tiled benches and little arbors create a setting of outstanding beauty away from the usual cultural trails.

The Jardins de Laribal were the city's first rose garden, and were originally known as the Colla de l'Arròs, after the group that would meet there to cook rice dishes in the open air. They are a place to stop off and admire, away from the bustle of the city. The countless details create a harmony that is hard to beat with panoramic views of Barcelona, making it a peaceful spot that invites you to disconnect.

The far end of the gardens were once part of the estate of Josep Laribal, a prestigious lawyer and journalist. The city council bought the property and grounds in 1908 and set up the Escola del Bosc, a school that was very advanced for its time due to its pioneering educational system. The Catalan teacher and educator Rosa Sensat was the director of this innovative school that marked a renewal in the teaching of the time. The child became the central part of the education system and the outdoor spaces were transformed into a classroom.
