The Verbena and the Festival of San Juan
Popular festivals and traditions, Summer Nights

The Revetlla de Sant Joan is one of the most celebrated of the Barcelona fiestas. It commemorates the start of summer and the traditional way of doing this is by lighting bonfires. Throughout the entire city, piles of wood and old furniture are set alight while music plays everywhere and local community celebrations spill out onto the streets, the squares and the beach. An essential element of the event is the traditional coca flatbread with candied fruit and pine nuts, a typical Sant Joan Night treat. And even though, in reality, it is the shortest night of the year, for many it undoubtedly seems the longest!.
