Michelangelo Antonioni & Luigi Ghirri - La Virreina Centre de la Imatge
Barcelona Art Season, Exhibitions
10/31/2025 - 02/15/2026
The exhibition Michelangelo Antonioni and Luigi Ghirri at La Virreina Centre de la Imatge brings together the works of two great artists born in Emilia Romagna, who, although they never met in life, shared a deep introspective gaze towards the world around them. Through film and photography, both artists explored the micro-histories of everyday life, inviting the viewer to observe what usually goes unnoticed.
From Michelangelo Antonioni (Ferrara, 1912 - Rome, 2007), famous for his contemplative cinema and his portrayals of existential emptiness, we can admire the photographic series The Enchanted Mountains, while from Luigi Ghirri (Scandiano, 1943 - Roncocesi, 1992), we can enjoy images from the 1970s, where nature is approached from the perspective of imagination and abstraction.
The exhibition unites the two approaches, highlighting how both artists, born on the plains, tackle nature with a unique perspective that is both realistic and poetic. This exhibition invites us to reflect on everyday life, following Georges Perec's premise: to observe what happens when nothing seems to be happening.
