MACBA - Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona

The Museu d'Art Contemporani (MACBA) is a museum in the Raval district that houses an extensive collection of contemporary art by local, Spanish and international artists.

The museum opened in 1995 and its contemporary-style building was designed by the American architect Richard Meier, who won the Pritzker Prize in 1984. The white structure combines straight lines and curves with a glass frontage and a vast outdoor plaza, which is obstacle-free and functional.

On one of the main walls above the museum entrance, you can see Rinzen (Sudden Awakening), the work Antoni Tàpies presented at the Venice Biennale in 1993. It is a plea against war and won the Golden Lion for painting at the biennale. Inside the museum, visitors can enjoy a wide variety of temporary and permanent exhibitions of contemporary art. The MACBA's permanent collection features works by artists including Joan Miró and Eduardo Chillida.

The MACBA also organises cultural and educational activities, such as guided tours, workshops for children and young people, talks and panel discussions. It also has a specialised library with a large collection of books, magazines and other reference materials for researchers, students and art lovers.
