Districte 38 office buildings in the Zona Franca (Arata Isozaki)
This project, designed by the 2019 Pritzker laureate, Arata Isozaki, stands between Passeig de la Zona Franca and Montjuïc and is part of the 70,000 m2 business park, Districte 38. The building, which was completed in 2011, consists of a virtual cube that is 52 m2 on one side. Many parts of the building have been subtracted from the volume, making the composition more dynamic and creating an access porch, spacious covered terraces on the levels between the top and ground floors, and stepped roofs with open terraces. The asymmetrical composition has resulted in four different façades in two sections: a structural one with visible pillars and one corresponding to the enclosure of the curtain wall. The elevations have been subdivided into rectangular panels in different shades of grey and green. The interior has been distributed around a solid central core that ensures a smooth vertical flow throughout the building. The offices have been placed around the perimeter and have spacious, open, flexible areas in an L or C shape. The water company, Aigües de Barcelona, which currently occupies the building, has renamed it the Ciutat de l'Aigua (City of Water).
