Murals at the TRAM-Sant Martí de Provençals station
The artist Elisa Capdevila sought to create a hymn to the everyday on the walls of the Sant Martí de Provençals tram station. Her realistic – and hyperrealistic – gigantic murals depict members of the local community who look as if they could come to life at any minute.
They seem to be vying for the attention of passengers, who often never look up during their journey, in an attempt to get them to appreciate the richness of the commonplace and enjoy situations and pastimes that are no less interesting, no matter how frequently they occur. A couple with their daughter, someone reading a book or enjoying listening to a song through their headphones make us feel part of the scene. They seem to embrace us.
Capdevila is a master of the figure, so much so that she deceives us with the lifelike details characteristic of the trompe l'oeil technique. A dove or a bench that could almost be real; shadows that highlight the figures and make them human; a realism that is, at times, hyperrealistic; bodies standing 3 metres tall that don't make the passenger feel uncomfortable.
The artist empathises with the viewer by depicting them in their surroundings and is able to recreate their environment as a result of her experience painting large-format works in other parts of the city. She loves working on these projects because they allow her to create connections with permanently changing, living spaces.
